How to help
Unbreaking is run in the spirit of a mutual aid cooperative: everyone rolls their sleeves up to collaborate on the shared project of plainly documenting the verifiable events that are taking place, and the people who are harmed as a result. The work of researching, writing, and editing issue pages depends upon a lot of comradely collaboration, deep respect for each other’s agency, and a minimum of ego—as well as solid skills for rapid fact-finding and sense-making. Much of our work is asynchronous with some efforts benefiting from synchronous conversations among a small group. Expertise in various areas of government is very much welcome but not required to participate.
Note that we do not do any original reporting, nor do we accept or handle leaked information. Do not leak to us.
Our highest priority volunteer needs right now include:
- Research: digging through a range of credible sources to catalog and summarize key events and details about a topic.
- Writing: turning a timeline of events and a pile of research notes into sentences and paragraphs; our writing style is rigorous, clear, and direct.
- Community and operations: recruiting, onboarding, and supporting our growing team.
If you are interested in joining our small but mighty crew, apply to volunteer using this form; everyone who applies will hear from us within a week or two.
